Skincare trend: Skin Fasting
I was recently asked about trends in skincare, and of course, there are such trends! One of the latest trends that has emerged is called "skin fasting."
What is skin fasting?
In short, it involves taking a step back from your usual skincare routine to allow your skin to recover. The idea is that by not using skincare products, your skin can "find its way back" to a healthy state. Proponents argue that a break from skincare can give the skin the opportunity to heal itself.
How do you fast your skin?
The principle is quite simple: stop using all or parts of your skincare routine. The most extreme advocates suggest completely stopping everything—no cleansing, no serums, no creams—just water. This assumes you're not using makeup either.
Others, who are less extreme, suggest removing active ingredients like retinol, acids, or vitamin C to let your skin return to its normal renewal cycle without help.
Are there benefits to skin fasting?
Honestly, I have no idea. That's probably not the answer you wanted, right? The problem is that there are no scientific studies proving that this is effective. So, I really don't know how beneficial it is. However, if you try it and it works for you, by all means, keep it up! Skin fasting doesn’t seem harmful, as long as you continue to use sunscreen when you're outdoors.
Personally, I can’t imagine a life without skincare. Half the joy is in the ritual every morning and evening—the time I can focus on myself and shut the world out. That moment is too valuable to give up just because of a trend!
