The sun, which has been absent for so long, is finally starting to peek out. With that, it also becomes noticeable how I’ve taken shortcuts while cleaning during most of the fall and winter. The dust bunnies can no longer be missed in the corners, and the dirty windows are almost screaming to be washed.
Just as our homes need a thorough spring cleaning, our skin does too. During the winter months, the skin is affected by the drier air, temperature fluctuations between warm indoors and cold outdoors, and the lack of sunshine.
Many experience drier skin, a loss of radiance and elasticity, along with that lovely sun-kissed tan from last summer being just a distant memory.
So, how do you get your glow back?
The easiest way to revive the skin is through a really good peel. There are many different types of peeling products on the market today, ranging from toners to creams to masks. What they all have in common is that they often deliver immediate results. Peeling products typically contain some form of acid. For a peel that removes dead skin cells and restores a glow to the skin, the most common acids are glycolic or lactic acid, also known as AHAs.
Peels are also great if you want to deep-clean your pores; for this, salicylic acid or BHA is perfect. It penetrates deeply and helps prevent pores from becoming clogged.
What should you consider when choosing a peel?
The most important thing to think about when choosing a peel is what you want it to do. Do you want to restore radiance, eliminate blackheads, or address dry, flaky areas—or all of the above?
AHA-based peels work more on the surface, while BHA-based peels work more deeply. Those that combine both? They solve everything and bring about world peace!?
The A & O of Peeling
No matter which scrub you choose, there are two key things to keep in mind.
Too much of a good thing is simply too much, and instead of getting a glow, you’ll end up with reactive skin that isn’t happy. Start gently, 1-2 times a week is sufficient at first. Listen to your skin; don’t peel just for the sake of peeling.
USE SPF EVERY DAY, especially after using acids. Skin that has been scrubbed is new skin. And new skin needs protection from the sun, which is the number one enemy of the skin. Make sure to have SPF all year round, even on cloudy days, as harmful rays from the sun still reach us. Make SPF a part of your skincare routine. You’ll thank me for it.
